The Great War: An Orkney Memorial Experience

The Great War
An Orkney Memorial Experience

The walls of Orkney’s St Magnus Cathedral were transformed as the internationally significant building
became the canvas for a unique film marking the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Artwork
This was a big collaboration between different artists, resulting in a mix of styles and crafts.
From 2D frame by frame, to 3D animations in Houdini.
Print
The artwork was printed and framed, as a limited collection.
The Projection
The animation was a very large format and designed to fit on the front of the the Cathedral.
Storyboard
The Tree
The film ran on a loop eight times from 5pm each evening for two weeks until Remembrance Day on 11 November.
At around 7.40pm each night the animation came to a rest on the final image – a tree,
made up of the names of Orcadians who died in WWI, in a field of poppies.
Thank you!
